Christmas Greetings From Menton



Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and a Healthy, Peaceful 2026

I'm looking forward to spending time with family and friends over Christmas and into the New Year and then I have plans for a snow shoe hike and yoga weekend near Gréolières in January and then, in June, a short 112km walk along the Camino del Norte from Santander to Llanes.


I will write a proper update in the New Year when I will have more time to write, when you will have more time to read and when I hope to have a publication date for my next book.

Carte de Séjour and a French Tax Return

It's May, the beaches are being tarted up for summer visitors, roadworks along Les Sablettes are nearing completion and I have collected my carte de séjour and posted my first tax return . I've decided to call the weeds in the garden wild flowers and let them have their way. With all the rain last month and now warm sunshine everything is going a little mad. Wild gladioli ( the purple ones) Who knew there was such a thing? I love the crazy air plants Last May I began the online renewal process of my (one year) longterm visa. I finally reached the final stage last week.  I  received an SMS saying my carte de séjour was ready. Having received all other communication by email or message through the website, I thought it was a scam. Just as well I checked with someone more knowledgeable.  I had to collect the carte de séjour from the prefecture in Nice . Day 1

A brief summary: After breakfast  we took the metro to Campanha. We had an hour to wait for the bus to Caminha, in a bus station reminiscent of Digbeth in the 1970s but with better coffee. The bus was late but the connecting bus to Caminha was held for us. The second driver overtook everything as we drove along the coast road. We arrived on time.    Then things went a little awry.      We went to find lunch in the delightful square in Caminha before starting our walk  We ordered. Seven beers, one wine, seven toasted sandwiches, one burger. One beer and  one wine arrived. We waited. After a few minutes six beers appeared. Then after a short delay, one burger and one sandwich arrived. We waited, And waited… The first two meals were finished. The beers going down. We waited. The one member of the group with any Portuguese, went to ask. The waitress had misunderstood the order. Six sandwiches were ordered. We waited. Twenty minutes later, they arrived...

It's 2025

 Happy New Year from Menton. I don’t know about you but I’ve never quite got the point of celebrating New Year.  The 1st of January 2025 is not really that different from 31st December 2024, nothing changes except those last digits. I remember many years, when I was working, getting the year wrong for several days before I got the hang of it—sick notes, prescriptions, cheques would be returned to be altered and initialled... That was of course before computers did everything and told you what day it was.  Don’t get me wrong, over the years I’ve been to some fabulous parties—counting down to midnight, dancing the night away but now I’m happy to let others mark the occasion for me.  This New Year’s Eve I went to a very civilised drinks party which ended before nine, allowing me to go back to my apartment watch a bit of nonsense on Netflix and be in bed by half past ten.  I heard the firework display and it sounded magnificently lavish but not impressive enough to ...
